Mr. Xiaoqi Tan
Ph.D. Student

Xiaoqi Tan is currently a 4th year PhD. student in the ECE Department at HKUST. He received his B.E. degree from the Department of Information and Communication Engineering (first class honor), Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an (the home of Terracotta Warriors), China, 2012. After that, he joined the research group of C2E in HKUST. From Oct. 2015 to April 2016, he was a visiting research fellow in School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), Harvard University.

He is interested in all kinds of performance analysis and optimization problems for real world systems, in particular, power and energy systems, by applying techniques from queueing theory, stochastic modeling, and optimization.

His current research is particularly motivated by two important emerging components of smart grids, i.e., the battery energy storage and the electric vehicles. He belives that battery is expected to play a key role in future energy systems. Moreover, when batteries are moving around enabled by electric vehicles, two orginally separated large networks, i.e., the power network and the transportation network, are becoming increasingly correlated in their design and control, which yields many new challenges and requires a substantial research.
